									<p>Xueqing He is a Chinese student, with a master’s degree from China Agriculture University in Beijing, currently on her last year of her PhD at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. I met with Xueqing, to learn more about her experiences and findings, on how to utilize insects to regulate plant pests, as a sustainable alternative to the predominant use of pesticides.</p><p>“So, Xueqing, would you like to tell us a little bit about your research area?”</p><p>“There are many different ways to ‘destroy’ pests; I’m specialising in biological control. Simply put, this means, using another organism to control the pest. For example, ladybugs can eat many aphids (a kind of pest), so we can use ladybugs to control aphids. I’m trying to find ways, to efficiently use insects to control pests. This is beneficial for both us and the environment,” Xueqing says.</p><p>“What does it mean to do a PhD in this field? What are you experimenting with during your everyday work?”</p><p>“Well, because these insects are alive, I have to figure out how to confine them to control pests. I’m experimenting with ladybugs, which tend to fly away if there is not enough food around. So, I need to find a way, to make them stay on the field and be ready for pest,” she says.</p><p>She adds: “However, ladybugs also consume plant pollen and nectar (non-prey diet), too, so I’m experimenting with different flowers, to find out which one the ladybugs prefer. The idea is to plant some flowers on the side of those crops, for the ladybug to find some food there instead of flying away.”</p><p>“Could you tell us a little bit about the difficulties you encounter during your research?”</p><p>“Well, when deciding, as a scientist, which plants these ladybugs prefer, you have to take into consideration that you might not get the same results at the lab, as you would on a field test. For example, at the lab, you plant the exact number of flowers you need, but at the field, you might end up with less flowers, because of the weather. So, something that works nicely at the lab, might not work at the field,” Xueqing says.</p><p>Buckwheat and dill flowers have given her successful results so far.</p><p>“How is your everyday work at the lab? What are you exactly working with?”</p><p>“During the experiment, I had to replace the old flowers with new flowers every day, to see how long the ladybugs can survive on flower diet. So, basically, I was babysitting these ladybugs,” Xueqing says, while laughing.</p><p>She adds: “I have been experimenting with sugar solutions also: Ladybugs can live up to two to three months on sugar solutions only, with no ‘meat’ at all!”</p><p>“Do you expect your research findings to have an impact back at your home country?” I ask Xueqing.</p><p>“Yes, although I don’t have a very detailed plan yet! China is an agricultural country and has thousands of years of history in agriculture. There are many people nowadays that are working on trying to combine the knowledge from the past with these new findings. More and more young people are becoming farmers, too, and the government is really supporting this! [The] Chinese realize that the modern agricultural system is not really working &#8211; I mean, we use pesticides and we realize the problems in this area that we need more healthy and sustainable food, so, as more know about this, and more push, this field is growing fast! I’m very happy to see that there are more and more people working on this now, so, I see that I’m not alone!” she says.</p><p>“How did you find out about the University of Copenhagen?” I ask.</p><p>“I did my master’s in China and my previous supervisor [collaborated] with my current supervisor. I am a big fan of organic agriculture, and organic farming is well-developed in Denmark!” she says.</p><p>“What is it like doing your research at a Danish University?”</p><p>“Here people treat you as a member of the staff, you are not a student anymore! You are very independent in your work,” she says, adding: “And, honestly, I think here people are super nice! They are really nice!”</p><p>“Why did you choose to do research on sustainable food production?” I ask.</p><p>“After the Second World War we kept producing as much as possible, to not let people [go] hungry. Today, we still use a lot of pesticides. Of course, we are aware of the harm that those pesticides cause, [but, previously,] we only focused on the benefits of using them. Today’s pesticides are not as poisonous as in the past, though. The reason I’m doing this research is because I believe that we can do better and I’m trying to do my part on this! I want to deliver this message: That we can use organisms from the nature to control the pests instead of pesticides,” she says.</p><p>“Also, my parents are farmers and I grew up on a farm. I know that some people think, that organic agriculture sounds sometimes like a fairy-tale. It, [sometimes,] sounds super idealistic! I have friends that have tried organic agriculture and they have failed really [badly]! The reason behind [this,] is that it comes with a lot of work; you need to plant those plants and then, you need to take care of them, which requires a lot of time! [In] the end, they don’t get that much out of it,” she adds.</p><p>“Even here in Denmark… I thought that being a farmer is nice. Then, I visited a farm and I realize that, no, this is not the case! Being a farmer is difficult everywhere! I don’t like this, because they are the foundation of the society and they shouldn’t be treated like this! That is not fair!” she adds.</p><p>Xueqing has volunteered at two organic farms here in Denmark.</p><p>“I like organic agriculture and I’m doing research on it, but I wanted to see, how it really is out there, what’s going on in a real organic farm in Denmark. Of course, it’s fun, too!” she says, while laughing.</p><p>She believes we can do better by learning from the nature and wants to continue her research in this area of sustainable agriculture research and development and assist in developing new methods.</p>								</div>

This little bug has an average life span, when living in the wild, to 2 to 3 years. The ladybug is a common protector of crops, and a farmer’s dear friend, due to the insatiable consumption of plant-eating pests. The ladybug is so insatiable that the second a larvae is hatched it begins feeding. A single ladybug can in its short lifetime eat thousands of aphids, and with its spots and coloring, it appears unappealing to its natural predators, which makes it a small, but efficient tool in controlling plant-eating pests. However, the appetite varies among the different kinds of ladybugs, which makes it increasingly difficult to gather knowledge about their preferred eating habits.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: 10pt;">Source: <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/invertebrates/group/ladybugs/" rel="noopener">https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/invertebrates/group/ladybugs/</a></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 10pt;"><strong>Aphids</strong></span></p><p><span style="font-size: 10pt;">An Aphids, is a soft-bodied insect, which feeds on plant saps through a sucking mouthpart they pierce through the plant. Aphids are considered among the most destructive insect pests, especially, due to their extreme reproduction (the female aphids give birth to more females, without the involvement of the male). 									<p>Consumers and the broader public have been more and more interested in what organic and sustainable agriculture can offer, namely, pesticide-free food and reduced environmental impact. The overuse of pesticides as a strategy to prevent disease has raised concerns with farmers and scientists, too, as resistant diseases are on the rise.</p><p>Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a wheat disease but also a public health concern. The disease is caused by several fungi from the <em>Fusarium </em>genus. When these fungi attack the kernels of the wheat plant, they produce toxic substances in the grains that can harm both humans and animals when consumed. One of these toxins is called <em>deoxynivalenol</em> or DON. After ingestion, DON can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness and fever.</p><p><a href="https://plen.ku.dk/english/employees/?pure=en/persons/544161" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Edward C. Rojas</a>, a Colombian student with a background in agronomy from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and a master’s in molecular biology from the Université de Lausanne in Switzerland, is currently doing his Ph.D. in Denmark trying to find natural ways to control the FHB. He is studying under a full-time, 3-year, EU funded project, which he commenced in January 2016, under the guidance of <a href="https://plen.ku.dk/english/employees/?pure=en/persons/11699">Professor David Collinge</a>.</p><p>I met Edward at his office at the University of Copenhagen, to learn more about his interesting research on this wheat disease.</p><p>“How did you find out about this program?” I ask Edward.</p><p><em> </em>“It was an open call, there were hundreds of people applying. I got selected for an interview, and I was offered the job,” Edward says with a proud smile. “I knew the work of my current boss, and I knew that he was a good scientist, so I decided to apply,” he adds.</p><p>Edward’s project makes part of the <a href="https://cerealpath.eu/">CerealPath</a> EU program, under the <em>Marie Skłodowska-Curie</em> <em>grants</em>, that has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research. The program is employing 15 Ph.D. students from all over the world &#8211; 2 of them at the University of Copenhagen &#8211; and aiming at increasing the sustainability of wheat production, thus contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 2: <em>Zero Hunger</em>, as wheat is one of the most widely consumed cereals in the world. All 15 Ph.D. students are working on the same area, namely, innovative ways to control cereal-diseases, Edward says.</p><p>Edward’s work focuses on finding specific microorganisms, called “endophytes,” i.e. mostly bacteria and fungi, that live inside the plants and are native to the fields, that could defend the wheat plants against the FHB disease.</p><p>Edward surveyed fields in Denmark and Sweden looking for these microorganisms and tested them against the disease. In his lab, he found several microbes that can reduce FHB in wheat and could become a clean alternative to pesticides.</p><p>“Agriculture in the EU is much more productive compared to the agriculture in developing countries, mainly because of the larger amounts of fertilizers and pesticides, farmers in Europe use on the crops,” Edward explains.</p><p>“FHB is widespread worldwide and a very important issue nowadays. As climate change rises global temperatures, FHB levels could increase. Additionally, people are more concerned on how their food is produced. We need clean alternatives that control the disease and do not harm the environment,” he says.</p><p>“The overuse of pesticides can make pathogens develop resistance, which could make them more difficult to fight in the future; the inclusion of maize in crop rotations is increasing the problem,” he adds.   </p><p>Asked about the potential applicability of endophytic microbes as biocontrol agents in other contexts, for example in his home country, Colombia, Edward is very positive:</p><p>“There is much more diversity of microorganisms [<em>there</em>] so, for example, if in Denmark there are 10 or 15 of these species, in the tropics, there would be hundreds, even thousands. We can exploit all that biodiversity to find interesting organisms. The farmers in Colombia would have an economical incentive to try an alternative, too, as they cannot afford buying the amount of pesticides the farmers in the EU do,” Edward says.</p><p>“Have you considered how could your research be used or advanced in the future?” I ask.</p><p>“The use of microorganisms to reduce disease levels in plants is not new. There are reports of similar works from 1914. So, this is an established field in agricultural sciences. In my opinion, my research fits in the framework of trying to build sustainable agriculture. That is a global necessity. So, I would only expect it to grow in the future,” he says.</p><p>“There have been cases of corporations taking advantage of traditional knowledge of people in indigenous communities, utilizing their genetic resources. How can we ensure that this high level of biodiversity in the area is not exploited?” I ask Edward.</p><p>“This is totally out of the scope of my research and the project goals, since we are not aiming for such environments and we do not work with corporations. I know the existence of the EU bio-safety regulations which demand full disclosure of the origin and other characteristics of the microorganisms that are desired to be used on a larger scale,” Edward says.</p><p>However, a question remains: “What are your thoughts on how we can ensure that the benefits arising from future research at your home area can be shared with the provider country for the benefit of the locals? Any thoughts on ensuring benefit sharing?”  </p><p>“As I mentioned this is not a new idea, so, I am sure there are academics in universities on those areas trying to find microorganisms with potential use in agriculture as well. The best way these people can benefit from such advances is to share our knowledge on how to use microorganisms in agriculture. Luckily, that is exactly what we are doing. All our results will be publicly available for anyone in the world who wants to learn how to exploit these organisms,” Edward says.</p><p>His lab results have been successful so far. However, farmers would first need some successful results in the field, too, in order to adopt any alternative:</p><p>“Unfortunately, due to last year’s exceptionally dry summer in Denmark, we must wait to run a new test next year,” Edward says.</p><p>Asked about the next step in the process, he says, that it would be to test the mass production of these microorganisms for the market.</p><p>“Is there any controversy in this research area?” I ask Edward.</p><p>“The only opposition I can think of, would be from agrochemical companies that sell pesticide products. However, even these companies are trying to enter the biological era, by investing a lot of money in research to find microbes with potential, just like we are doing. In general, there is an agreement that anything that aims towards more sustainable agriculture, would be beneficial,” Edward says.</p><p>Edward finds the workplace environment in Denmark very healthy, due to the low levels of stress and its horizontal hierarchy:</p><p>“Here I just have to address my supervisor using his first name,” Edward says, something that he finds very different from what he recalls was the custom in his home country. </p><p>Is he considering going back to do some more research on this area in Colombia?</p><p>In the near future no, but in 10-15 years, it could be a possibility, he says. </p>								</div>

									<p>The <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) of the 2030 Agenda </a>officially <a href="https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/development-agenda/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">came into force</a> on 1 January 2016 succeeding the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/global-development-professionals-network/2015/sep/26/7-reasons-sdgs-will-be-better-than-the-mdgs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">UN Millennium Development Goals</a>. How can we make sure that the SDG’s trigger the needed action from all stakeholders? That was the challenge which the <a href="https://atv.dk/about-atv" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV)</a> and the <a href="https://www.danvid.dk/english" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Danish Science Journalists Association</a> jointly put to the panellists at a conference held at the <a href="https://www.novozymes.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Novozymes</a> complex in Bagsværd on Friday, 8<sup>th</sup> of March 2019.</p><p>Kicking off the full day conference, Professor Kathrine Richardson, who heads the <a href="https://sustainability.ku.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sustainability Science Centre at University of Copenhagen</a>, presented an update on SDG performance, emphasizing the dynamics of interaction between the individual SDGs. Then, a full day of discussion divided into three sessions commenced. A panel of speakers introduced each session, engaging the audience of about eighty science journalists and communicators in the room:</p><p><strong>Session 1 – How do companies, researchers and reporters work with the SDGs?</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Claus Stig Pedersen</strong>, Head of Global Sustainability &amp; Public Affairs, Novozymes;</li><li><strong>Henrik C. Wegener</strong>, Rector, University of Copenhagen;</li><li><strong>Anna Lund Nielsen</strong>, Project manager of the volunteer-driven initiative “Bæredygtighedskaravanen” (i.e. ‘Sustainability caravan’)</li></ul><p><strong>Session 2 – Digging deeper: How to support and monitor relevant research and private sector initiatives?</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Mette Reissman</strong>, member of the 2030-Network of the Danish Parliament and research policy rapporteur of the Social Democratic Party of Denmark;</li><li><strong>Jesper Nygård</strong>. director of the philanthropic association Realdania;</li><li><strong>Jakob Nielsen</strong>, editor in chief, ‘Altinget’ and ‘Mandag Morgen’</li></ul><p><strong>Session 3 – Do we need a different kind of (constructive) journalism to report on SDGs?</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Ulrik Haagerup</strong>, CEO, Constructive Institute;</li><li><strong>Tor Arnbjørn</strong>, Sustain Report;</li><li><strong>Mark Ørsten</strong>, media researcher and head of the Journalism education at Roskilde University;</li><li><strong>Thomas Hoffmann</strong>, news editor at Videnskab.dk.</li></ul><p><strong>Call for stronger commitment</strong></p><p>“What makes people change?” Claus Stig Pedersen, Novozymes, asked and continued: “People are not rational; we become motivated when somebody talks to our emotional side. That is why an event focused on peoples’ emotions will be effective in motivating people; this and more political action is what is needed,” he said.</p><p>Politicians must listen, Rector at the University of Copenhagen, Henrik C. Wegener, said and added: “There is a lack of political will. There is a need for a political leadership to address these issues the best possible way. The latest knowledge should be available to politicians for their decision making and the role of the independent experts is to be there and advise them,” he said.</p><p><strong>Monitoring performance</strong></p><p>Research policy spokesperson for the Social Democratic Party of Denmark and member of the <a href="https://www.2030netvaerket.dk/2030-panelet" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">2030 Network</a> of the Danish Parliament, Mette Reissman, agreed with Professor Richardson that all 17 goals are mutually dependent on one another and thus closely linked. She explained that the 2030 Network of Parliamentarians established in March 2017, is closely monitoring Denmark’s performance on the SDGs.</p><p>The first of several baseline reports to be published by the 2030 Network was launched on 31 January 2019. This first baseline report on Denmark’s performance on SDG 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, is considered a pilot project. The report is written by the <a href="https://dac.dk/en/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Danish Architecture Centre (DAC)</a> and <a href="https://ramboll.com/management-consulting" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ramboll Management Consulting (RMC)</a>. Partners in this effort are <a href="https://www.kl.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">KL &#8211; Local Government Denmark</a> and <a href="https://www.dst.dk/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Statistics Denmark</a>. Financial support was granted by <a href="https://www.rambollfonden.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ramboll Foundation</a> and <a href="https://www.realdania.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Realdania</a>; the latter is a philanthropist association, and its Director, Jesper Nygård, stressed that we need to maintain an international perspective, while at the same time work on the SDG’s in our own country.</p><p>Professor Katherine Richardson set the focus on the future: “It is important to know where we want to go,” she said. The 2018 <a href="https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2018/overview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">SDG’s report</a> documenting the results achieved after 3 years of implementation of the 2030 Agenda is an important tool for this purpose. Editor in Chief at ‘Altinget’ and ‘Mandag Morgen,’ Jakob Nielsen agreed, because “some have started viewing the SDGs as a ‘smiley scheme’ for business,” he said.</p><p>Professor Richardson suggested that setting up a course on the SDG’s with a certificate could prove to be useful: “Your future employer would also be interested in seeing you having such competences and an interest in the global challenges, and therefore a joined certificate from CBS, DTU and KU for this purpose is a great idea,” she said.</p><p>Henrik C. Wegener commented that change should come from the inside out to every one of us: “We have to really mean it,” and for that reason such a certificate from a university will neither be enough, nor something that your future employer would be interested in, he claimed.</p><p><strong>Constructive journalism</strong></p><p>Several panellists pointed to the role of media in promoting the SDG’s. However, conventional reporting won’t do.</p><p>Editor in Chief, Jacob Nielsen, argued that a different approach is needed “The media must report without fear, seriously and thoroughly; be more critical and do more research, as well as be more constructive,” he said.</p><p>Ulrik Haagerup, CEO of the Constructive Institute, explained that you can do constructive journalism and be critical, simply by documenting a problem and being critical about it: “Constructive journalism has a very special focus contrary to that of ‘breaking news’ and ‘investigative journalism,’” he said. Haagerup made a distinction between ‘Breaking news’ being about <em>now</em> and having a <em>police</em> role, and ‘investigative journalism’ being about <em>yesterday</em> and having a <em>judge</em> role; and constructive journalism being about <em>tomorrow </em>and having a <em>facilitator</em> role.</p><p>Also, Thomas Hoffmann, journalist at <a href="https://videnskab.dk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Videnskab.dk</a>, the online science magazine with the largest readership in Denmark, supported a clear focus on the solutions and not on the problems; the debate on whether Denmark can produce green fuel is one such example, he said.</p><p>Project manager of the volunteer-driven initiative <a href="https://ida.dk/om-ida/temaer/baeredygtighedskaravanen" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">“<em>Bæredygtighedskaravanen</em>”</a> (‘Sustainability caravan’), Anna Lund Nielsen, shifted the focus onto the young generation: “Young students and recent graduates are emotionally involved and highly motivated &#8211; They are going full speed ahead,” she said.</p><p>Jakob Nielsen agreed: “There are many young people that do believe in SDG’s and journalists should cover and communicate these new trends,” he said.</p><p><em>The <a href="https://atv.dk/nyheder/nyhed/fns-verdensmal-vi-skal-redde-verden-sammen" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Conference report</a> by ATV (in Danish only) includes selected presentations by panellists.</em></p>								</div>
