A

African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS). ACTS is an international intergovernmental science, technology and environmental policy think-tank that generates and disseminates new knowledge through policy analysis, capacity building and outreach. Research focus areas include agriculture and food security; biodiversity and environmental governance; energy and water security and science and technology literacy.

African Food Security Urban Network (AFSUN). AFSUN was established in 2008 as a network of African and international universities, non-governmental and community organizations, and municipal governance networks. The netowrk aims, among other goals, to improve  the knowledge base on urban food security in Africa and to build African human resource capacity and expertise in food security policy and management.

African Insect Science for Food and Health (ICIPE). ICIPE is an organisation working on environmental, human, plant and animal health issues with starting point in the study of insects in order to help ensure food security and better health for humankind and its livestock, to protect the environment and to conserve and make better use of natural resources.

BiosafeTrain is a project that aims to build up capacity to cope with the challenges of introducing genetically modified crops in East Africa by developing a platform for capacity building on biosafety impact assessment of transgenic plants.

Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). CGIAR is a research organisation with 15 centres worldwide, working together with national institutions, NGO's and the private sector, with a mission to foster sustainable agricultural growth and sustainable food security in vulnerable communities with the aim of contributing to an overall reduction of poverty in developing countries.  

Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Mega Programme 4 (MP4) - Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health. This page is the group site for the development of the Agriculture for Improved Nutrition and Health Mega Program. The online space will serve as the living repository for the program, particularly during the proposal development phase. In addition to hosting different versions of the proposal/concept note, the site will also serve as a repository for partner feedback, letters of support from partner organizations and contain links and documents to further information on guidelines for developing Mega Program proposals and the Strategy and Results Framework for the CGIAR.

e-Agriculture.org. e-Agriculture.org is a global initiative to enhance sustainable agricultural development and food security by improving the use of information, communication, and associated technologies in the sector.

European Action on Global Life Sciences (EAGLES). EAGLES aims at enhancing the collaboration between European researchers and researchers in the developing world to fight hunger and disease.

Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET). FEWS Net provides timely and rigorous early warning and vulnerability information on emerging and evolving food security issues with a focus on livelihoods. FEWS NET has country centres in Africa, Central America and Central Asia and the website gives access to maps, vulnerability analysis and overviews over food prices and market flows in different countries worldwide.

FAO Glossary of Biotechnology for Food and Agriculture. The Multilingual Glossary provides a convenient reference source for researchers, students, technicians and translators and it can also be of value in discussions at intergovernmental level. It provides consolidated, comprehensive, up-to-date and accessible list of terms and acronyms used regularly in biotechnology and its application to food and agriculture.

FAO – ILO website “Food, Agriculture and Decent Work”. The website was launched by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in June 2008 and intends to give visibility to FAO-ILO’s collaboration, highlighting the linkages between employment, rural development and food security.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO website gives access to information on FAO programmes and policies and analysis related to agriculture, fisheries, forestry and natural resources, as well as food security and emergency situations and response.

Food Security Center. The Food Security Center based at the University of Hohenheim is engaged in policy advice and multidisciplinary research on food security with particular concern given to gender equality, rights of women and sustainability of agricultural production. The centre focusses on South-North collaboration and offers scholarships to PhD students from developing countries.

Food Security Information for Decision Making. Food Security for Decision Making is a joint FAO/EU programme dedicated to improving the quantity and quality of food security information and analysis and to promoting its use in decision making. The website gives access to e-learning courses, tools and country briefs monitoring food security and cereal and livestock prices. 

Food Security Information for Action. Programme by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the European Union that has just entered a new phase aimed at forging even closer links between food security information and the decision making process.

Food Security Portal. This website facilitated by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) provides new tools to support the global food security discussion by making news, data, and price analysis more accessible.

Global Consortium of Higher Education and Research for Agriculture (GCHERA). Consortium is to foster global cooperation for the improvement of higher education and research for agriculture as a prerequisite to solving the food security and environmental problems confronting our world.

Global Food for Thought. This is the official blog of the Global Agricultural Development Initiative. It provides updated information, commentary, and analysis on breaking developments on international agriculture, food, and related issues.

Hot Spots in Emerging Global Food Crisis. Interactive world map highlighting countries at highest risk of a food crisis due to the recent food price hikes created by the Environmental Working Group and ActionAid.

I

Institute for Food and Development Policy (Food First). The Institute for Food and Development Policy is a think-tank, which seeks to inform and amplify the voices of social movements fighting for food sovereignty. The institute carries out research, analysis, advocacy and education for informed citizen engagement with the institutions and policies that control production, distribution and access to food.

International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). The aim of IFPRI is among other things to contribute to the capacity strengthening of people and institutions in developing countries that conduct research on food, agriculture, and nutrition policies. The site provides the possibility of searching for research resources by country.

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). IITA seeks to to enhance food security and improve livelihoods in Africa through research-for-development (R4D). IITA works with partners in Africa and beyond to reduce producer and consumer risks, enhance crop quality and productivity, and generate wealth from agriculture.

International Potato Centre / Centro Internacional de la Papa (CIP). CIP seeks to achieve food security and reduce poverty on a sustained basis in developing countries through scientific research and on potato, sweetpotato and other root and tuber crops, and on the improved management of natural resources in the Andes and other mountain areas.

Journal of Agriculture and Food Systems Community Development (JAFSCD). New online, international, peer-reviewed journal focused on applied research and best practices in the development of thriving farming communities and sustainable food systems.

National Basic Food Prices Data and Analysis Tool. This website launched by FAO and GIEWS shows the prices of different food commodities in local currencies or dollars and local measurements as well as standard weights. It allows for price comparisons between domestic and international markets, between different markets in the same country, as well as between countries.

Plantwise. Plantwise is a global intitative, led by CABI, to improve food security and the lives of the rural poor by collecting and sharing vital information about plant health, in order to reduce crop losses.

R

Regional Hunger and Vulnerability Programme (RHVP). RHVP supports policy-makers and practitioners concerned with food security, social protection and vulnerability in southern Africa with a specific focus on social protection and social transfers.

Regional Network on HIV/AIDS, Rural Livelihoods, and Food Security (RENEWAL). Facilitated by IFPRI, RENEWAL is a growing regional network-of-networks that aims to enhance understanding of the worsening interactions between HIV/AIDS and food and nutrition security and to facilitate a comprehensive response to these interactions.

RUAF Foundation - Resource Centres on Urban Agriculture and Food Security. The RUAF Foundation functions as a global network of 6 regional organisations that share a common vision on urban development and poverty reduction and together implement an international programme focussed on urban agriculture and food security.

S

Smart Farming, an initiative of Greenpeace India, attempts to bring together scientists, academia, think tanks, development professionals and farmers to a common platform to discuss smart and sustainable farming solutions to ensure food security.
