Reporting from DDRN-BiosafeTrain Workshop: Environmental consequences of growing GM crops in the developing countries

The issue of genetically modified (GM) plants as a means of achieving food security in developing countries has generated a lot of debate. Developing countries are unwilling to take over others' data and risk assessment. Existing laws mostly specify in-country assessments that need significant research. Consequently, the assessment of GM plants and the building of legislative framework should be supported by vigorous research activities, specifically targeted to these countries.

The objective of the meeting was to present a state-of-the-art of GM environmental impact knowledge with specific relevance to the developing countries, and to identify and discuss the main points of uncertainty.

Date: November 29-30, 2007
Venue: Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, Øster Voldgade 10, 1350 Copenhagen K. Room 05.2.527
