Poverty, Forests and Climate Change - Practical Strategies for Ensuring Pro-Poor Approaches to REDD
Date and venue: Tuesday April 21, 2009 - Danish Institute for International Studies, Strandgade 71, 1401 Copenhagen K
Background
One of the controversial issues at the upcoming United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen is the establishment of a possible global mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD). Deforestation is estimated to account for some 20% of global emissions, and the establishment of global carbon financing mechanisms for addressing this problem could potentially direct very significant funds towards developing countries.
However, in the current debate over such a REDD mechanism there has been limited attention to how it will affect and be affected by broader processes of land-use change, poverty and natural resource governance in the South. This full-day seminar will attempt to throw greater light on these issues, by drawing on existing knowledge of land use and poverty dynamics, and on practical experiences from pro-poor forest management in developing countries.
