Organic Agriculture for Improved Food Security in Africa. Recommendations to Future Development.

Workshop at the First African Organic Conference

Time and venue: May 22, 2009 - Kampala, Uganda

Background:

The workshop was initiated by Aarhus University, ICROFS (International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems), and Organic Denmark in collaboration with NOGAMU (National Organic Agricultural Movement of Uganda) and Uganda Martyrs University. The purpose was to bring the results and findings in the report from UNCTAD-UNEP CBTF (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. United Nations Environment Programme, Cpacity-building Task Force), published in 2008, into discussion at this first African Organic Conference. The report analyses the relationship between organic famring and food security in Africa; and it presents evidence supporting the argument that organic agriculture can be more conducive to tood security in Africa than most conventional production systems and that it is more likely to be sustainable in the long term.

The aim of this particular workshop was to discuss how the findings can be used in practice, in terms both of being implemented by current genereations and of guiding future development.
