How to approach regional cooperation within Urban Environmental Management in Southern Africa

With the aim to help identify the drivers for change within Urban Environmental Management (UEM) in Southern Africa and produce insights into how different dynamics may be established at local, national and regional levels, the Southern African Research Network for Urban Environmental Management (SARUEM) was initiated in 2008.

In the process of further developing the research ideas, the initiators of the network called for at meeting to engage in dialogue with other researchers and practitioners working within UEM and/or regional research cooperation to introduce the SARUEM initiative and discuss the future process of strengthening regional research cooperation.

To facilitate this dialogue, DDRN arranged a meeting for the Danish resource base. The meeting also included a brief presentation of the UEM activities that have led to the SARUEM initiative, including the mapping of UEM research in Southern Africa carried out for DDRN by Hans Hessel Andersen and the workshop oragnised by DDRN in South Africa in December 2007.
