Reducing risks to cities from disasters and climate change The article sums up papers by by Patricia Romero Lankao, Gordon McGranahan, Deborah Balk and Bridget Anderson, Mike Muller, and others. It point to the fact that 13 per cent of the world’s large cities with 10 per cent of the world’s population lie in coastal zones directly threatened by the effects of climate change. Thus, there is a clear urban agenda. But there is little evidence that national governments or international agencies are responding to this. The article is available online. Please follow this link. Call for papers: Energy and Environment - Competing Powers? YHYS seminar 2007 is addressed to environmental social scientists to join their forces in discussing 1) the societal preconditions and impacts of different energy production schemes, 2) socio-historical changes involved in the production and consumption of energy, 3) agreement and conflict as related to energy issues both globally and locally. Undermining communities and the environment: a review of the International Finance Corporation's environmental, health, and safety guidelines for mining Report by Earthworks, 2007. The report assesses the International Financial Corporations (IFC's) environmental, health and safety (EHS) guidelines for large-scale mining projects. The reviews shows how these EHS guidelines have significant gaps and omissions, including the failure to specify the performance levels or quantitative measures necessary to protect local communities and environments impacted by these projects. In some cases the guidelines do not even meet the mining industry's existing "best practice" standards. The report also highlights a lack of ongoing monitoring and evaluation following the completion of the project in order to evaluation the impact of mining activities on the environment, health and livelihoods. It also suggests that in the assessment phase, potential impacts should be made available to the communities that will be affected and should have access to resources for technical resources and supporting information. The report is available online. Please follow this link [PDF]. Climate, carbon, conservation and communities Briefing paper published by IIED and WWF, by Dilys Roe, Hannah Reid, Kit Vaughan, Emily Brickell, and Jo Elliott, August 2007. This paper explores the opportunities from and limitations to carbon-based funds for conservation and development. It highlights mechanisms that may help secure benefits for climate, conservation and communities. The briefing paper is available online on the IIED website.
