Joint course: Industrial Ecology - Learning from the Biosphere to develop Sustainable Technospheres

The Joint Course on Industrial Ecology 2007 is the latest in a series of joint courses on Cleaner Technologies, Environmental Impact Assessment and Life Cycle Management, which were initiated in 1999 as part of the cooperation between the Danish and the Malaysian University Consortia on Environment and Development, Industry and Urban Areas (DUCED-MUCED I&UA).

8 PhD scholarships at the International Research Training Group

The International Research Training Group, Modeling Material Flows and Production Systems for Sustainable Resource Use in Intensified Crop Production in the North China Plain”, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, is seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for 8 PhD scholarships starting June 1, 2007 for 2 years with an option for a third year, subject to prolongation of funding by DFG.
The PhD grant amounts to 1,103 € net per month (+ allowances for family and stays in Beijing).

New international Master's Programmes at SLU - Department of Urban and Rural Development, Uppsala

The Master Programme "Environmental Communication and Management" – 1 year, 60 ects, is starting in September 2007. Environmental communication is the study of:

  • Emergent processes of social change, aiming at sustainable development;
  • Social interaction of different character as e.g. conflict, learning, negotiation, power, concerning natural resource management;
  • Collective action in the context of environmental issues, investigated at individual, group and/or policy levels.

Approaches to Development - U-LANDSLÆRE

In the spring semester 2008, a multidisciplinary course titled ”Approaches to Development” will be offered to students at the University of Aarhus and the Danish School of Journalism. 

  • The main objective is to increase participants’ knowledge of development issues and work within a multidisciplinary context.
  • Each individual student will, however, be able to participate in the course using topics and methods specific to his or her main study subject.

ECOPOLIS Graduate Research Awards

As part of its strategy to create knowledge and unleash potential innovations, the Urban Poverty and Environment Program (UPE) at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is launching the ECOPOLIS Graduate Research Awards with the goal to promote research projects that help lighten the environmental problems borne by the urban poor and enhance their financial, human, resource, and social and political assets. Awards will be granted to cover expenses related to Master- or Doctoral-level research projects in developing countries where the candidate has formed a partnership with local academic institutions, such as universities, and non-academic organizations.

Scholarships at the Nordic Africa Institute

The Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) supports studies on Africa in the Nordic countries through six types of grants:

  • Study scholarship programme, to spend one month in Uppsala using the Institute's library resources. Next application deadline: October 1, 2007. 
  • Scholarship for PhD candidates, to cooperate with the research clusters at NAI to spend three months at the institute. Next application deadline: October 1, 2007.
  • Nordic guest researchers' programme aimed at researchers in the Nordic countries and awards scholarship for a maximum stay of two months. Next application deadline: October 1, 2007. 
  • Travel scholarship programme, for short research trips to Africa in connection with ongoing research projects. Next application deadline: January 15, 2008.
  • African guest researchers' scholarship programme, for five to six scholars per year who are invited to spend between two and three months at the Institute, working on their own projects. Next application deadline: April 1, 2008.
  • African Guest Librarian Programme, competence development during 4-6 weeks, for specially selected social science librarian. The application deadline was June 15, 2007.

New link: Network of Young Researchers working in Africa

The Network of Young Researchers working in Africa (NYRA) was created in 2007 to provide a forum for PhD students and young researchers in the social sciences working in Africa, to facilitate academic exchanges across national and institutional borders. It is the initiative of a group of PhD students, based in different countries and institutions and it is not affiliated to any particular university or research institute.

Approaching Organizations

The Graduate School in International Development Studies at Roskilde University, the Danish Institute for International Studies, and the Department of Political Science, Aarhus University are happy to announce the Ph.D. course Approaching Organizations.

The Ph.D. course will deal with the analytical and methodological challenges faced in studying the nature and role of organizations in development. The course proposes to explore a broad range of organizations from the international level, such as the World Bank, to the national level, such as a government ministry or a large NGO, and down to the local levels of small NGOs, associations and local government departments and agencies.

New MA in Applied Human Rights

The Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York has established a new MA in Applied Human Rights, commencing in October 2008.
The MA will focus on the use of rights discourse and tools within the human rights mainstream and in a range of related fields (development, humanitarianism, conflict transformation, the environment, public health etc.).

Course on Research Methodology - 2008

DBL – Centre for Health Research and Development at Faculty of Life Sciences,  University of Copenhagen, Thorvaldsensvej 57, Frederiksberg, Denmark.

The course is organized by DBL with logistic support from the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC) at Frederiksberg. Call for participation: Funding Research in the Developing World

The Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP) from BioVisionAlexandria is organizing, in collaboration with The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), the interactive event “TWAS/BioVisionAlexandria.Nxt”. The event is schedule to run concurrently with the BioVisionAlexandria 2008 conference in April 2008 under the title “Funding Research in the Developing World”.

The CSSP is envisaging to invite 100 young scientists from developing countries to share their ideas and experience, in addition to meeting mentors and eminent scientists who would enlighten their knowledge into the fields of research and development.

Action Research Action Learning Workshop: Social Learning in Nature-Society Relationships - Methods and Tools in Action

Short term assistance at the DDRN secretariat (deadline extended)

The DDRN secretariat is about to implement a series of improvements of the DDRN website and member database. To assist the Communications Officer with this task, the secretariat is now looking for a student to help with the following tasks:

- Contacting network members to update their profiles on the DDRN website;
- Finding information about funding sources for development research to be posted on the DDRN website;
- Assisting with the creation of new interactive functions on the website;
- Editing and reorganising posted information on the DDRN website.

Assistance at the secretariat (in Copenhagen) is needed in the period April – May 2008, approximately 5 hours a week.

We are looking for a student with very good English skills who has experience from previous work with databases and websites. Salary will be given according to standard rates at the University of Copenhagen (approx. DKK 125 an hour including holiday allowance).

The Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) provides authoritative online news, opinion and analysis about the role of science and technology in addressing the economic and social needs of the developing world. PhD position: Remote sensing of precipitation in mountainous areas

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship related to remote sensing of precipitation in areas of complex topography. ESRC Funded PhD Studentship in The Governance of Clean Development in the School of Development Studies

Seminar 2-2/2008: Video Stories - digital opportunities for communication in research for development

Workshop aimed to introduce participants to digital video primarily as a tool that can be used to strengthen dialogue, information sharing, participation and learning in research and development projects, and between projects and wider society.

A successful workshop was held on May 19, 2008. A second improved version of the same workshop will be held in Copenhagen on December 11-12, 2008.

Objectives
The workshop is designed as a practical exercise in facilitation of story making. The overall purpose of the workshop is to provide participants with an introduction and basic skills for facilitating digital video, and constructing a video story. There will be special focus on challenges and opportunities for video as a tool for analysing issues and for self expression in situations where use of video cameras may be new. 

Target group
This workshop is primarily aimed at young researchers who are about to carry out an internship or field study in the South in relation to their Master or PhD theses and who wish to use digital video as a participatory tool. However, other interested stakeholders are encouraged to participate. In order to make sure that everyone is able to play a full role, workshop participation will be limited to 12 persons.

Travel grants for Master students

DDRN has received an interim Danida grant for the fall term of 2008 in support of thesis field work of Master students enrolled at Danish institutions of higher education.

The theme of the theses must fall within the thematic areas of DDRN (agriculture, environment, governance, economic policy, and public administration) and "other areas".

The DDRN secretariat is about to udate the DDRN website and member database and has taken over the majority of the administration of the autumn call 2008 for Danida’s travel grants for master students. The secretariat is therefore looking for a student to assist the Communications Officer and the Academic Secretary with these tasks.

Assistance is needed during the period October – December 2008. The working hours will vary between 5 and 15 hours per week.

We are looking for a student with good English skills and with experience from previous work with databases and websites. Salary will be given according to standard rates at the University of Copenhagen (approx. DKK 125 an hour including holiday allowance). Please note that assistance will have to be carried out at the secretariat in Copenhagen.

Climate and Disaster Governance Student research bursary

The Climate and Disaster Governance Programme is offering research bursaries of up to US$1000 to support research at the national or sub-national level in developing countries on topics that fall under the four themes:
1) Citizen engagement and accountability in climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction policy processes;
2) What role for social protection in reducing climate and disaster risk?

3 PhD-scholarships within Organic Farming and Food Systems

Through financial support from the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation, three PhD scholarships are available within organic farming and food systems. The three-year studentships are expected to be effective from April 2009 or soon thereafter.

Two student positions vacant at the DDRN secretariat

DDRN is looking for two students to assist the secretariat, which is the implementing unit of the network, where information is gathered and disseminated. In collaboration with the DDRN board, the secretariat supports activities carried out by network members and organizes conferences and other meetings. The objective of the course is to provide a theoretical introduction into the main subject areas within Food Safety. The emphasis will be on contaminants, natural inherent plant constituents and additives as well as on microbiological entities.

The course is structured in a number of E-modules each of which contains a number of E-lessons, and starts on April 19, 2010.

The Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa (SSSUP) is about to start the 7th year of the International Doctoral Programme in Agrobiodiversity. Forest and Nature for Society (FONASO) is a three-year world-class Joint Doctoral Programme. Within forest and nature management, the programme is focused on the scientific fields of (i) economics and policy, and (ii) ecology and silviculture. The emphasis is on applied research.

University Meets Microfinance supports students' research on microfinance

NEW: PhD scholarship at DIIS and RUC on emerging economies and large-scale land acquisitions in Africa
